Hydrogen sulfide, or H2S, is a gas with a very strong odor. It smells like rotten eggs, and it can be toxic. H2S is harmful to people when inhaled, and thus knowing about it is necessary. What is H2S? (Why You Need to Know to be Aware of It)
The gas H2S exists naturally. It can be found in places like swamps, sewers, and in deep underground rock layers. H2S is important to know about because inhaling too much can result in illness or even unconsciousness.
It is commonly found in oil and gas fields, and poses a serious workplace hazard. If people inhale too much H2S, they can experience respiratory distress, dizziness and gastrointestinal symptoms. For this reason the workers working near H2S need to be cautious and safeguard themselves.

H2S poisoning can be avoided in several ways. One is to wear a safety device, such as a gas mask, while working in proximity to H2S. You also need good air flow to avoid build up of the gas. If you smell rotten eggs or something strange, leave the area immediately and alert an adult.

Natural gas and oil frequently accompany H2S. In these industries, workers can isolate H2S from the other gases. H2S is also used to create other materials, such as sulfuric acid, which is used in batteries and other products. But H2S is not something that you mess around with, it can become hazardous if not properly contained.

Symptoms of inhalation of H2s can include headache, dizziness, nausea or shortness of breath. If both you, or someone else, feels like this, it’s important to get to fresh air right away and seek help from an adult. And if it’s an emergency: Call 911 and let them know someone may have been exposed to H2S.
